Advanced orthopedic care is increasingly personalized, using detailed imaging and technology to help surgeons plan treatment around each patient’s unique anatomy. At Jefferson County Health Center, Mako SmartRobotics™ supports this approach by giving orthopedic surgeons detailed information to help plan and perform select procedures.
Mako SmartRobotics™ combines 3D CT-based planning with robotic-arm assisted technology to help surgeons develop a personalized surgical plan. Your orthopedic surgeon remains in control throughout the procedure and can make adjustments to the plan as needed.
How MAKO SmartRobotics™ Works
Scan:
A CT scan provides detailed images of your joint and is used to create a 3D model of your individual anatomy.
Plan:
Your orthopedic surgeon uses the 3D model to create a personalized surgical plan, including implant size, positioning and alignment.
Mako:
During surgery, Mako provides robotic-arm assisted guidance and feedback to help your surgeon carry out the plan. Your surgeon remains in control throughout the procedure and can make adjustments when needed.
Mako Knee Replacement
Mako SmartRobotics™ can be used for both total and partial knee replacement. Your orthopedic surgeon will determine which option may be appropriate based on the location and extent of joint damage, your symptoms and your individual needs.
Using a 3D model created from your CT scan, your surgeon can develop a personalized surgical plan before the procedure and use Mako technology for guidance during surgery.
Total Knee Replacement
Total knee replacement may be recommended when arthritis or joint damage affects multiple areas of the knee. Mako Total Knee allows your surgeon to plan the procedure based on your individual anatomy and use robotic-assisted technology to help carry out the surgical plan.
Partial Knee Replacement
Partial knee replacement may be an option when arthritis or joint damage is limited to part of the knee. The procedure replaces the affected portion of the joint while preserving healthy areas of the knee.
Mako Partial Knee is designed to help your surgeon follow the personalized surgical plan and support accurate implant placement.
Mako Hip Replacement
Mako SmartRobotics™ can also be used for total hip replacement, including procedures performed using the direct anterior approach.
Before surgery, your orthopedic surgeon uses CT-based 3D modeling to better understand the structure of your hip and create a personalized surgical plan. During the procedure, Mako technology provides additional information and guidance to help the surgeon carry out that plan.
Mako Total Hip supports several surgical approaches, including the direct anterior approach.
Robotic-Arm Assisted Anterior Hip Replacement
The direct anterior approach allows the surgeon to access the hip joint from the front of the body. When appropriate, Mako technology can be used as part of this approach to support personalized surgical planning and implant positioning.
